Why 50 is a Metamorphosis
I’m 50. I’m Not Old, I’m Just Getting Started
I’m 50 years old. I’m often told that I’m “not old, just getting started.”
To be honest, I take that as a compliment.
On the one hand, it’s nice to be told that I don’t look my age. On the other hand, it feels like someone is trying to tell me that I still have a lot of life left to live—which is both true and daunting at the same time. Because friends, I have no idea what I’m doing with my life. Some days, I feel like that 16-year-old girl who was just trying to get through grade 10 without standing out too much but still not getting left out. Some days, I’m still trying to find my place in this world where my gifts are meaningful and can maybe even help a fellow woman or two to be a better version of themselves than they were yesterday. In any case, I’m not going to let my age define me. I’m not going to let society’s expectations dictate how I should feel about myself. And I’m certainly not going to let anyone else tell me what I can and cannot do. Just because I’m over 50 does not mean that my life is over. In fact, I would argue that it’s just beginning.
Here are my 3 Reasons Why I Believe Life Begins at 50:
- Your Health is your Wealth.
They say that health is wealth for a reason. When you’re in your 50s, you start to realize how true that saying really is. At this stage in life, you’re more likely to prioritize your health—eating well, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep—and as a result, you’ll feel better than you ever have before. Trust me, it’s worth it!
- We’re Smarter and More Experienced Than Ever Before
In our 50s, we’re also smarter and more experienced than ever before. We’ve been around the block a few times and we know what we want (and don’t want) out of life. We know how to get things done and we’re not afraid to ask for help when we need it. We’re also generally more financially secure than we were in our 20s or 30s, which means that we can focus on other things besides just working to pay the bills.
- We’re Finally Comfortable in Our Own Skin.
After years of comparing ourselves to others and trying to meet unattainable standards of perfection, we’ve finally reached a point where we are more comfortable in our own skin. It’s taken a long time (and personally, a lot of therapy) to get to this point, but now that I’m here, it feels pretty darn good
So, there you have it! Three reasons why life begins at 50! If you find yourself hitting a bit of a mid-life crisis (I like to call it a metamorphosis), remember that you’re not alone— millions of us are right there with you-I’M RIGHT HERE WITH YOU, feeling just as fabulous as ever (if not more so). Embrace your age and use it as an opportunity to do all the things you’ve always wanted to do but never had the time (or money) for before! You’ll be glad you did! And if you’re younger than 50, take solace in the fact that there’s still time to get your shit together!
