As the weather warms up and the days start getting longer, it’s easy to feel a sense of renewal and rebirth. For many of us, spring is a time of new beginnings, a time to shake off the winter blues and start fresh.  Spring often makes us feel motivated to make changes in our lives. We can in fact see this same energy and motivation in midlife.  After all, midlife is a time of rebirth—a time when we can (and should!) take stock of our lives and make changes that will help us live our best lives.

 

Here are four ways you can use the energy of springtime to rebirth your midlife:

 

Get clear on what you want

Sometimes, the things that consumed our lives in our 20s, 30s, and 40s can leave us feeling stuck or like we’re just going through the motions.  It’s now time to get clear on what you want out of life.

  • What are your passions?
  • What makes you feel alive?
  • What are your goals?

Answering these questions can help you get clear on what you want to do with the rest of your life. Having trouble figuring out what gets you excited?  It can happen after years of losing our true selves serving our families and careers.  Try a process of elimination.  Write down what you DON’T want in your life; what doesn’t get you excited.  And once you know what you want, it’s much easier to take steps toward making it happen.

 

 

Clean up your act

Spring is the perfect time for a fresh start, so why not use this opportunity to clean up your act? If there are areas of your life that are no longer serving you, now is the time to let them go. This might mean decluttering your home, letting go of toxic relationships, or quitting bad habits like smoking or overeating. Take some time to clean up the apps on your phone that you don’t use.  Got books you no longer need?  Why not donate them to a nursing home?  When you make space in your life for positive things, good things will begin to flow in.

 

Nourish yourself—body, mind, and soul

It’s important to take care of yourself if you want to be able to take care of others. Make sure you’re eating healthy foods, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep. Spring is a great time to enjoy seasonal fruits and vegetables like asparagus, rhubarb, and cherries.  Also, take some time each day to nurture your mind and soul. This might mean reading uplifting books or articles, listening to inspiring podcasts, or meditating. When you nourish yourself, you’ll have more energy and clarity to pursue your goals.

 

Take action towards your goals

Now that you know what you want and have taken steps to clean up your act and nourish yourself, it’s time to take action toward your goals. What small steps can you take today that will move you closer to where you want to be? Be intentional with your actions and ask yourself if they are moving you closer to those goals.  It takes consistency and thought.  And can seem like a fruitless endeavour.  Remember, it’s important to celebrate each small victory along the way!  Before you realize it, you will be reaching your goals.
